With the official roll out of Facebook’s timeline just around the corner I thought it would be a good time to give you some tips on how to use the new Facebook Timeline as a personal branding tool. This is a great new tool regardless if you are a freelancer, small business owner or a career individual the features now available can help you r personal branding. To get started if you have not yet signed up for the new Timeline you can do so here it’s a simple process but activating it is really just the beginning.
Here are some things you might want to play around with:
First thing on the agenda should be to customizing the cover picture, this is a BIG piece of real estate and you might want to give some thought as to what message you are wanting to give others about yourself. The great thing is that you don’t have to be a web designer to do this; here are some links to great from which you can pick & choose something fun. Photo source Flikr
Next you might want to activate you “subscribe” button, this feature is great that can be part of your branding strategy; basically this allows others to follow your stream without having to go through the friend request process. Here is where you can activate the button and details that you might want to read up on prior to activating this feature Facebook subscribe button.
Although many see the value of this feature, the accessibility brings a whole new issue: “what about the stuff I don’t want everyone to see” as for example pictures of my kids, vacation picture etc. Not to worry this can be managed, maybe a bit of extra work but the option is available. The way you would do this is once the feature is enabled go into your account and use the “Edit” feature at the top right-hand corner of each post to manage that update. They are two ways you can protect your posts, hide from timeline or delete the post completely.
Another new fun feature that has been added on Timeline is the “Life events” these allow you to paint a picture of the most important things that have been happening in your life, you know things like getting a job, a new relationships, moving into a new house or starting a hobby. The fun thing about this is that these will all be dated and added to your Timeline at the appropriate time so it’s a wonderful way of keeping tabs of all the big moments in your life and looking back at a future date. Missed something no problem you can also add events with hindsight.
And finally the last tidbit I will share with you is the addition of various APP that Facebook has now approved (60 to be exact of lately) these are really a fun way to let your friends know who you are, whether you enjoy cooking, running, listening to music, travelling, and etc. Here is a link to more information and how you can activate the apps Timeline apps.
Have fun and share this post with your friends if you found it useful.
