The Short Answer
Both platforms are owned by Meta and share ad infrastructure. But they attract different audiences and reward different content types.
When Facebook Wins
Facebook is stronger for: businesses targeting 35+ demographics, service-based businesses, businesses that rely on community groups, and businesses that benefit from longer-form content and event promotion.
When Instagram Wins
Instagram is stronger for: visually-driven businesses (restaurants, retail, fitness, real estate), businesses targeting 18 to 45 demographics, businesses building a personal brand, and businesses investing in Reels and short-form video.
The Best Strategy for Most Local Businesses
Start with both, but invest more time in the one where you get more engagement. Cross-post content when it makes sense, but tailor your approach to each platform.
What About TikTok?
TikTok has the highest organic reach of any platform right now. If you can produce short-form video consistently, it is worth testing. But do not spread yourself thin. Master 1 to 2 platforms first.
